So another piece from my travel book... I got drunk... nice and ripped at the ball. And yet, I was able to draw this before I started talking like a fool on the phone. I don't remember too much after that. I went home, called the first person on my phone and then fell asleep right after.

Sketchy Blues

Between the speeches and the main course, I sketched this in my travel book (which is a hell of a lot smaller than my regular sketch book and can fit in a purse). So during the krewes music numbers, I drew this up. One of the krewes themes this year was the Blues Brothers, so I worked off that idea.

I've been busting my tail on the La Crosse Mardi Gras event that starts this weekend with the Mardi Gras Ball. I plan to take my travel book with me to the party, in case there's a lull or two, which I'm sure there will be. But with everything coming up, I started drawing this mask. I had this idea of a tree dropping blossoms for the main part of it. the hat part doesn't make sense, but I was lost for an idea as I lost steam on the sketch.

Miscommunication

It doesn't matter who I wrote it for, and only the person who should know what all is actually contained in it may never even get the original, uncensored letter. It was more a study in not reading everything that's there. Or rather, not wanting to see what is there, right under your nose. So often people look and think they know what that person is like, through their work, through photos, and what drivvel is posted on facebook or twitter. If you were really willing to listen, or look deeply, you'd see you're missing some vital part of the person sitting just across from you.

okay... so this one isn't an actual sketch in the book. I did this in a live doodle on a website while BSing around in between writing my twitter updates for RIPT. The head started looking like a turnip or beet, so I went with the pun... He needs bongos and dark sunglasses, though.

This cold, flu, bubonic plague, whatever the hell it is... put me in an even more depressed mood once I found I lost my voice from coughing so much. When I get sick, it's epic. Epically horrible. And I think it affects my drawing as well. Coincidentally, I slept most of this whole weekend away.

I admit, I was pretty delirious when I drew this. I think I was going for a transformation piece but ended up with something half-assed. Most of the time, drawing while ill produces quirky stuff. This? probably not so much.

Foils and a Haircut... A Bit More Than 2 Bits

I showed up late.I thought the place was closed, and yet the sign said 'OPEN'. Apprehensively, I considered not checking the door before turning tail and not going through with it. The owner took a look at the photos I presented her and had me wait while she finished up what was going to be her last customer of the day. 2 hrs later, I came out with a new haircut. 7 inches cut off initially and then another 3 in trim after she started shaping the hairstyle. I wanted it a little longer, but in order to get rid of the dead ends and such, she had to start off shorter. It's deceiving in the photo, but it is still past my shoulders and about 3 inches down my back. It'll be a cut in progress. I need to let it grow again, with trimming to get it just like I want it.

The Nightmare I Won't Be Doing For Woot...

I've told people recently about my nightmares about teeth. How people will just randomly come up to me and talk to me in my dreams and then, for no reason, they will reach into my mouth and remove a molar. The molar is picked out of my mouth and it's like an empty shell with a smaller version of the tooth beneath it, which disintegrates into nothing. Then every tooth in my mouth feels like I can move it all over the place, as if I can almost pull them out. Many times, I've awoken, checking for every tooth in my mouth to make sure they're there. Yeah, this should not keep me up at night. And yet... it does.

Sometimes I want to hurt you. You repeatedly hurt me over and over and you don't even know it. I try to be strong and not let it show, but this is how I feel. You need to know how it feels too. So I hope it hurts when I shove this needle into your heart, your spine, and every other place I think you deserve to feel unnecessary pain. Because frankly... I'm tired of it.

A Possible Chinese Sub-Project

I don't know how this will work, and I'm unsure if it will be something I continue to do, but I figure this will be worth exploring a bit. I went grocery shopping today and saw a special on crab cakes. Crab cakes? In Wisconsin? Yeah, they probably suck... But being the dork I am, I couldn't resist the idea of drawing a cake of crabs. Somewhere in there, I revised it and made the cake as the shell of a hermit crab. So here he is, the Hermit Crab Cake.

Perhaps a bit EdgarRMcHerly-ish, but I wasn't trying to copy him at all. I don't think I could ever master his truly unique style, nor would I ever begin to claim that I am ever as good as he is. Hungry Won(ton) Out...

I've been craving Asian food for a couple weeks now and 'Hungry' finally won. You've probably seen this little puppet on commercials lately. He's the silent mascot of Weight Watchers. Tonight, he came to my house, holding chopsticks and pushing me out the door as I gave in to my foodie desires: Vietnamese. Though I did not have pho noodle soup, I DID have spicy red curry shrimp with sticky rice, and shrimp egg rolls. And it was AMAZING. Thank you, Hungry, for making me buckle and forcing me to go to Hmong's Golden Egg Rolls.

Oh Priscilla (valorandvellum), you have inspired me once again! I was drooling over her shirt at DBH that just printed while I listened to a special on the Discovery channel about Peru. This piece was the result. I think I'd like to blow this up further and add more details. I don't know if it would go over well as a shirt design, but I really enjoyed how I made it so asymmetrical with the poncho.

Here's to crazy, drunken, late night ideas, artists and New Years resolutions! I've often wanted to take on a project like this and I hope I can remain vigilant. I almost screwed it up with day one, but I DID get it drawn before midnight. I may not get these up every day, but I will try for every other day or once a week. However, the sketches themselves WILL be drawn and dated for each day. May you enjoy what I have to offer (some, I will not take the added time to ink like I did for this one) and by all means, give ideas or write what you like or dislike about my pieces!
